Classes: The Ranger

Rangers - Master trackers. With the skills of both a fighter and a druid, plus some unique skills of their own, rangers can be very difficult to develop and have a number of different ways to be played.

What is the best way to play a ranger? Can a ranger be soloed, and if so how? How should you play a ranger within a group? What spells and skills are the most important for the ranger? How can you develop your ranger to be the most effective? What equipment and armor should your ranger be looking for?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Ranger and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I just wanted to say that I think the new /autofire command is fantastic. I know a lot of rangers have already gotten used to using gamepads and such for their autofire needs, but I have never used one.

I've noticed that it no longer centers your view upon firing each arrow now. It really does make a difference when you're running backwards and kiting a mob. It makes it a lot easier to move where you want to go.

And being able to communicate to your group/guildmates while keeping your archery DPS up is priceless.

I'm not familiar with parsing damage myself, but I did notice that it seems to be firing faster than when I was mashing my hotkey. Does anybody have any input as to whether or not it HAS sped up a little, being that it is serverside-controlled now?

Thanks to SoE for FINALLY doing something (anything, even if it's as seemingly non-existant as this) for us Rangers.

I was using the Nostromo game pad with a key macro set with a 0.8 second delay. I'd have to say that the /autofire is an improvement over the game pad-- I used it for the first time last night in MPG and I looked like a half elf version of a gattling gun. I would say that /autofire is a 10% improvement over the game pad. Also, I love the fact that I can now con mobs, talk with my group/guild or respond to a tell without having to turn off the gamepad's macro. I still love the game pad though since I've programmed it to do many other things with my left hand-- its very versatile.

My first impression of /autofire (not parsed) is that it is equal to and possibly even slower than my gamepad. Even so, for kiting, the /autofire is fantastic, because I can turn it on, and have complete movement with my gamepad, including strafe (something I couldnt do before).

However, the gamepad is superior in some situations, namely those which require that you turn to follow the mob you're shooting. I was in HoH GY in a kite group last night (standing in the center as a necro kited the mob in a circle around us), and in order to stay on target I used the gamepad autofire.

Final verdict however, is that this is a HUGE bone they're thrown us Rangers, whether you already use a gamepad or not. Very, very nice function.

How do you get it to work? Lol

Simple instructions would be appreciated... I clicked the range attack button but that only single fired it seems, so I just used the autofire program figuring I would figure it out later.

Still havent figured it out lol. Smiley: banghead

Thank you Smiley: smile

The command line is /autofire. I added a cmopletely unnecessary emote along the lines of "Sarth noc's an arrow in a blur of motion and sends it streaking toward %T"

Autofire is great, especially for people like me who have a poor or inconsistent connection to the game server. Instead of mashing the button and hoping you timed it right or spam-mashing the button and not worrying about timing (I've tried both), just click it on and you're set.

There are some programming quirks they still need to work out to make it consistent with the auto-melee function, but I'm very pleased with the addition of this new function.

I think it has sped up the ranger arrow fire because when you use to mash the hotkey there was server lag and such.
